Deep Ripping Viability

strategies for improved trafficability

Paddock trafficability post ripping is a major constraint to the implementation of deep ripping on a commercial scale. Seeding and spraying operations are particularly affected which can lead problems such as poor establishment, machinery damage and in some circumstances soil erosion. This trial has been established by MSF near Pinnaroo in 2020 to investigate solutions to this problem.

The trail included two different deep ripping machines:

Hanton and Sharrad bar fitted with straight shanked Tilco tine

Williamson-Agri CT6 fitted with curved Michel tines

Both rippers had tines spaced 50 cm apart and ripping was completed to a depth of 500 mm. There was also a non-ripped treatment included in the trial. Ripping treatments were implemented with commercial machinery with each plot 24 m wide and 54 m long. Following ripping one half of each plot was rolled using a Ellvorn Engineering Steel Roller, therefore the final size of each plot was 12 m x 54 m.

The trial was sown to wheat on the 11th of May 2020 by the collaborating farmer using a Horwood Bagshaw PSS seeding bar. Seeding was completed at 90 degrees to the direction of ripping.

The following data has been collected from the trial:

Emergence depth: Plants were carefully dug up and the coleoptile length was measured from the top of the soil in the furrow.

Plant Population: The number of wheat seedlings per square meter was measured

Trafficability:

Prior to seeding a Toyota Landcruiser use was driven across the treatments. The depth of wheel rut left by the tyre was then measured.

• Un-ripped treatments had shallow ruts of 40-50 mm but were 120 mm following deep ripping with both ripper types.

• Consolidating the ripped surface with a roller reduced rut depth by 50%.

Emergence Depth:

Plants were carefully dug up and the coleoptile length was measured from the top of the soil in the furrow.

Plant Population: The number of wheat seedlings per square meter was measured.

• Seedlings emerged depth in un-ripped treatments was 20-30 mm. A similar emergence depth was achieved in both ripping treatments which were rolled.

• Where deep ripped treatments were not rolled, the average seedling emergence depth was 50 mm for the curved Michel tine and 60 mm for the Tilco straight tine.

• The position of the seeding boots on the seeding bar also affected the seed depth. Seeds germinated from a depth of 75 mm from rows sown with boots from the front of the seeder bar however the seedling germination depth was 45 mm for rows sown from the back of the bar

• There 16% decrease in wheat establishment and reduced early vigour of the deep sown rows.
